CATALOGING CHECK EDITOR

Use this screen to enable/disable individual cataloging or filing indicator checks. The list of cataloging checks is in tag order; cataloging checks where the Brief Message begins with '[Tag]' are applied to multiple tags and appear at the top of the list.

WHAT IS A SET?

We use the term 'Set' to refer to a group of decisions that you have made about what Cataloging checks are enabled and what cataloging checks are disabled. Sets are useful if you frequently work on files from different vendors (for example, if you receive all of your new cataloging on vendor diskettes), and would like to turn off different reviews or checks for each vendor.

By default, MARC Report is installed with a cataloging check set called 'DEFAULT', in which all cataloging checks are enabled. You may not make any changes to this default set.

HOW TO MAKE CHANGES

The currently active set appears in BLUE at the top of the screen, followed by the list of cataloging checks. If you have created more than one set, you can switch from one set to another by clicking on the down arrow (which will open a list of all of your saved sets).

To begin customizing, the first task is to create a new set: Select 'Create new set' from the 'File' menu.

From this point on, the cataloging check set that you created above will be the one that the program uses–until you activate a different set by clicking the 'Load Set' button.

Now that you have created a new set, you can begin to customize it. To disable or turn off a Cataloging check, click in the 'Enabled' column of the check you wish to disable and type 'N'. To enable a Cataloging check that you have previously disabled, click in the 'Enabled' column of the check and type 'Y'.

NOTE: You cannot add cataloging checks. If you want to add your own validation data, please see the section called 'Local Validation Data' in the Valdiation options.

SORTING

You can sort this table simply by clicking on any of the column titles. Clicking on the column title a second time, reverses the sort order.

EXAMPLE: RECON SET

If you are reviewing older records and do not wish to be quite so particular as you are about new records, you may wish to activate the 'Recon' cataloging check set which we distribute with MARC Report.

To do this, click the 'Load Set' button, select the file named 'Recon set.ccs', then click 'Open'. Again, the 'Currently loaded set' remains active until you load another set, so be careful to change back to your normal set when working on a file of newer records.

NOTE: Additional settings on the Validation options page are also appropriate when reviewing older or 'Recon' records. First, we recommend that you check the boxes for 'Ignore Obsolete coding' and 'Ignore Old coding'on the Validation page. Also, on the same page, consider checking the boxes for ignoring local fields, such as 09x, 59x, 9xx, and check the box for 'Apply Filters to Cat Checks' to turn off all Cataloging Checks that apply to the fields referenced by the filters.
