GMD processing

Here is a summary of the GMD processing that is used by TMQ in various software modules.

Since many GMDs are 'made-up' by the cataloger, not all of the data extracted from this field is retained in some PLP crosschecks.

• a copy of the 245 field is extracted from the record
• subfield $h is extracted from the 245 field
• standard normalization is applied, with the exception that the data is shifted to lowercase
• the plural form of any GMD listed in ACCR2 is replaced with its singular form (eg. 'pictures' becomes 'picture')
• the following replacements are made:
  • 'computer file' becomes 'electronic resource'
  • 'website' becomes 'electronic resource'
  • 'interactive multimedia' becomes 'electronic resource'
  • 'map' becomes 'cartographic material'
  • 'globe' becomes 'cartographic material'
  • 'large print' becomes 'text large print'
  • 'videocassette' becomes 'videorecording'
  • 'video recording' becomes 'videorecording'
  • 'dvd videorecording' becomes 'videorecording'
  • 'dvd' becomes 'videorecording'
  • 'sound cassette' becomes 'sound recording'
  • 'compact disc' becomes 'sound recording'

If any of these replacements are made, the copy of the 245 field in the record being checked is updated with the change.

Subfield $h is extracted from the copy of the 245 field obtained above

• If the GMD contains '(braille)', or any subject heading contains the word 'braille', set the GMD for that record to 'braille'
• all parenthetical qualifiers are extracted, then deleted (eg., '[text (large print)]' becomes '[text]'
• any data following the closing bracket is deleted (in the event a subfield $b or $c was omitted)
• standard normalization is applied
• If a record contains a normalized GMD that matches any GMD strings in the following list (this list is based upon an LCRI, and so reflects an LC policy), its GMD is set to null:

   CHART, DIORAMA, FLASH, GAME, MICROSCOPE, MODEL, MULTIMEDIA, MUSIC, 
   OBJECT, PICTURE, REALIA, SLIDE, TECHNICAL, TEXT, TOY, TRANSPARENCY
   

• If one record has the GMD 'electronic resource', and the other record has either the GMD 'microform', or no GMD at all, do not fail the crosscheck
• If, at this point, the GMDs in the records being compared are not the same, the crosscheck fails.
