About version numbers
The first number, for many years now a '2' in MARC Report, is the major version number.
For our software, the second number and third numbers comprise the release number; in the example, it is '31'. For most users, this is the most important number.
The release number of the beta version is always one greater than that of the current release.
The last number, '552' in the above example, is called the build number, and it is used to distinguish between different revisions (or editions, if you will) of the same version. Some prefer to call this the 'sub-version' number, and although we try to avoid this, sometimes, this appellation is appropriate for a beta release.
